We heralded in the start of 2019 with a ride through the centre of London on January 1st in the London New Year's Day Parade! Quota and Ditadora were part of the equestrian team 'All the Queen's Horses' that joined over 7,000 Parade participants from around the world. Over 500,000 spectators lined the route which started in Picadilly and finished in Whitehall, leading to Horseguards Parade and Buckingham Palace.
An extraordinary day that we shall remember for a long time!

Sussex Lusitanos enjoyed an excellent week of competition and presence at Royal Windsor Horse Show.
Our 2 trade stand horses, Quota and Zigzag, met the public all week and were admired by regular and new visitors to our stand.
Ditadora, ridden by Leila Rahmatallah, was placed in both the Ridden Lusitanos Class (English Dress) and the Lusitano Parade. Quota, ridden by Sherene Rahmatallah, gave her utmost in the Ridden Senior Showing Class and the Lusitano Parade a grand veteran at 21 yrs old!
Thank you to everyone who visited our stand, and also to all the riders who supported the Lusitano Parade Class, which was sponsored by Sussex Lusitanos.

The Pride of Portugal Display, organised by Sussex Lusitanos in association with N.Pimenta, was a resounding success at Olympia on 13th - 19th December. Capacity audiences were wowed by the skills of the 16 Portuguese riders and their Lusitano horses. A new musical score and elaborate lighting made the display a true spectacle, filled with emotion and brilliant riding.

Sussex Lusitanos are bringing 16 top Lusitanos from Portugal to perform at the London International Horse Show, Olympia on 13th - 19th December. The riders are coming from several different regions in Portugal - they will give a display every afternoon and evening for the duration of the Show.
Sussex Lusitanos are collaborating with N.Pimenta to bring the Lusitano Display to Olympia. Based in the north of Portugal, N.Pimenta are organisers of the successful Ponte de Lima Horse Fair. Sussex Lusitanos and N.Pimenta will have a stand at Olympia - please do come and visit us!

What a brilliant Royal Windsor Horse Show this year which featured HM The Queen's special show to celebrate her 90th birthday. We were there for the entire week, with our stand overlooking the Copper Arena and our 2 Lusitanos Quota & Zigzag doing a great PR job meeting thousands of public over the 5 days. On the final day they both competed - Zigzag in the English Dress Class and Quota (4th), joined by Ditadora (6th), in the Portuguese Dress Class, a class which we sponsor every year at the Show. We were honoured to be invited to take part in the 2016 London New Year's Day Parade on January 1st with our 2 purebred Lusitanos Quota and Zigzag. 500,000 tourists lined the streets of London to watch the Parade which started in Picadilly, proceeded past Leicester Square and Trafalagar Square, past Big Ben and down Whitehall. The Iberian Team were led by Patrick Kempe and their theme was 'Oranges & Lemons'. The equestrian part of the parade - 'All the Queen's Horses' - was organised by Caroline Marsh and comprised 64 horses in total An amazing day which we shall never forget!

Quota, our purebred Lusitano mare (breeder Coudelaria Romao Tavares) and Zigzag, our purebred Lusitano gelding (breeder Sussex Lusitanos) had the amazing honour of taking part in the London New Year's Day Parade on January 1st. As members of 'All the Queen's Horses', the equestrian element of the Parade, organised by Caroline Marsh, our 2 horses were in the Iberian Team (Iberian Team leader : Patrick Kempe). There were over 7000 participants in the Parade and just 70 horses in total. The Iberian Team comprised 9 Spanish horses and 6 Lusitanos. Approx. 500,000 people lined the route of the Parade which started outside the Ritz Hotel, proceeded down Piccadilly, past Trafalgar Square, along Whitehall and then took the horses down the Mall to Buckingham Palace. Congratulations to everyone in 'All the Queen's Horses' and thank you to Caroline, Andy, Patrick and all the organisers - it was an incredible day! The 2nd Iberian Performance Show at Merrist Wood Arena, Guildford is shaping up to be one of the foremost events for Iberian horses in the UK! Following last year's resounding success, entry levels are already high (closing date is 8th August - late entries taken if classes not full), promising another fantastic weekend for Iberian horse owners & enthusiasts. Goncalo Carvalho will return to the UK to give a clinic in West Sussex and Hampshire on 26th & 27th April. This clinic forms part of an on-going training programme with a group of Iberian & Warmblood riders - Goncalo has given 6 clinics to this group since February 2013, all of whom have shown impressive improvement in their riding technique. Our 5 yr old bay mare Ditadora impressed an audience of 6500 at Olympia on Monday 16th December. She was one of 3 horses in the Rafael Soto Masterclass which preceded the Gala Evening of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. Ridden by ex-Royal Andalusian School rider/instructor Gonzalo Marques, Ditadora displayed the early work of a young horse.

Olympic rider Goncalo Carvalho made a welcome and much anticipated return to the UK on 16th & 17th February to give his first clinic there. Many of his pupils were professional riders who ride Lusitanos at different levels of competition dressage. The clinic, which took place in West Sussex and Hampshire, marks the start of a regular training programme in the UK with Goncalo.
Clinic organiser Sherene Rahmatallah said 'Goncalo's first clinic here left a big impression. He brought a very clear message to all of his pupils - to concentrate on working your horse in a light and relaxed manner'.

By invitation of Dane Rawlins, Director of Dressage at Hickstead, Sussex Lusitanos produced a display for the "Olympic Dreams" Summer Ball at Hickstead on July 21st. The Portuguese dress carousel riders and horses were Sherene & Leila Rahmatallah (Quota & Zigzag), Alex Downing (Viriato), Holly Barber (Xis), Natasha Read (Sasa) and Nichola Crowther (Xique de Tramagueira). Alex & Natasha demonstrated the Lusitano's agility in working equitation. Competition dressage was represented by Justine Jevon who gave a super dressage solo on her advanced stallion Trigueiros, and by guest rider Gonzalo Marques Obeso who showed Sussex Lusitanos' 4yr bay mare Ditadora (photo above) /

Royal Windsor Horse Show (May 13th 2012) was a resounding success for everyone at Sussex Lusitanos. New acquisition Ditadora, a 4 yr old bay mare, bred by Coudelaria Romao Tavares & ridden by Ricardo Wallenstein, was placed 4th out of 27 entries in the Ridden Lusitanos (English Dress) Class. Zigzag, bred by Sussex Lusitanos & ridden by Leila Rahmatallah, gave an excellent show - also a first timer at Royal Windsor. In the Parade Class, Quota, bred by Coudelaria Romao Tavares & ridden by Sherene Rahmatallah was placed 6th and also won the prize for the Best Dressed Horse & Rider in the class. Sussex Lusitanos sponsored the Parade Class which attracted hundreds of spectators. Congratulations to the 2 class winners : Bailina (owned & ridden by Jackie Stevens) and Sasa (owned by Pine Lodge School of Classical Equitation & ridden by Natasha Read)

The Lusitano Ride from Portugal, supported by the APSL and organised by Sussex Lusitanos wowed the crowds at the London International Horse Show, Olympia last week. Ten riders - Eduardo Almeida, David Gomes, Ricardo Tavares, Carlota Mota, Joana Lopes, Nuno Baptista, Bruno Silva, Pedro Neves, Nuno Ticao & Francisco Lopes - and their horses gave 11 performances of the Ride. Chef d'equipe was Joao Ralao Duarte and display co-ordinator was Sherene Rahmatallah. Director Simon Brooks Ward commended the Lusitano Ride team saying "What a triumph the Lusitanos were. Roger Barnett of Sussex Lusitanos won the award for the Best British Breeder at the 2011 Lusitano Breed Show, held at College EC, Beds on 16th-18th September. ZECORA (Caju x Jaca), bred by Roger Barnett and owned/ridden by Gemma Laws of Pakefield Riding School, Lowestoft, were the outstanding winners of the Overall Female Championship at the Show. Huge congratulations to all the owners of our homebred horses: ARQUEIRO (Numerario x Safira) owned by Tim & Em Taylor, ZIRCAO (Numerario x Obreira) owned by Ann Coller & our own ZIGZAG (Caju x Doninha) - they were all stars!

Two ridden purebred mares from Sussex Lusitanos, Xanaia (8 yrs) and Quota (14 yrs) were highly placed in the Ridden Iberian Class at the New Forest Show on July 27th.
Xanaia, ridden by Leila Rahmatallah was placed 2nd and Quota, ridden by Sherene Rahmatallah, was placed 3rd in a large class of Lusitano and Spanish horses. Judge Sr Joaquin Rodriguez Moreno, from Spain, also awarded a special rosette to Quota as she represented the best example of a Lusitano in the class.
Xanaia and Quota are half sisters, sired by European Working Equitation Champion, Iberico, and bred by Coudelaria Romao Tavares.

The APSL Lusitano display team comprising 10 of Portugal's leading working equitation horses and riders will perform at this year's London International Horse Show at Olympia on 13th - 19th December. Organised by Sussex Lusitanos, this is a return visit for the Lusitanos who visited Royal Windsor Horse Show in 2004, 2005 & 2007, and also the European Dressage Championships at Hickstead in 2003. There will be 11 performances in total - one on 14th Dec and 2 daily on all other days. Lorenzo, the Flying Frenchman, with his team of Lusitanos will also be giving displays at this year's Olympia. Tori Peter, from Lancashire, and her grey 12 yr old Lusitano stallion, RH won the Ridden Lusitano (English Dress) Class and were placed 2nd in the Portuguese Dress Class at this year's Royal Windsor Horse Show. RH is bred by Coudelaria Oliveira e Sousa and is by Haxixe (by Xaquiro). This marks a double success for Tori and for Sussex Lusitanos, who helped Tori to buy RH from Portugal 4 years ago. Several Sussex Lusitanos' clients came forward to compete in this year's classes, held on Sunday 15th May. Their successes included: 4th place in the English Dress Class for Tim & Emma Taylor's Arqueiro (by Numerario & bred by Sussex Lusitanos) & ridden by Marcia Wakeman. 5th place in the Portuguese Dress Class for Quota (by Iberico), ridden by Sherene Rahmatallah. Well done to all the other Sussex Lusitanos clients who gave some very competent performances : Lois & Sue Beckett on Rubi, Amanda Cutler-Little riding Quejaz, and Leila Rahmatallah with Venturoso and Xanaia. Golega Fair - the annual celebration of the Lusitano horse - takes place on 5th - 14th November 2010. Sussex Lusitanos arrange a group trip to the Fair - the dates of the 5 day trip are 9th - 14th November - cost is £450.00, to include flight, accommodation and car rental. Thousands of horses and spectators fill the small town of Golega - competition includes driving, dressage, working equitation, Lusitano breed classes. There are also displays by the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, the School of Leziria Grande and many others.
LATE BOOKINGS ARE STILL BEING TAKEN for the trip, which includes a visit to a stud farm and welcome drinks reception.

Xanaia, the 7 yr old purebred Lusitano mare, owned by Sussex Lusitanos and ridden by Leila Rahmatallah, won the Iberian Ridden Class at the New Forest Show on 28th July.
This is Xanaia's first showing season under saddle - she and Leila went on to win the Ridden Lusitano Mares Class at the BAPSH Show, Hartpury on 31st July and also the Reserve Lusitano Championship at the same show.
Xanaia is bred by Coudelaria Romao Tavares. Her sire is APSL Stallion of Merit and European Working Equitation Champion 'Iberico' (by Cartaz) and her dam is 'Nata' (by Embaixador). She joins a successful string of Lusitano horses in the UK, all bred by the Coudelaria Romao Tavares Stud and owned by Sussex Lusitanos, including Numerario, Quota and Morena.

Special congratulations are due in particular to the class winners : SONETO (English Dress - 21 entries), owned by Alan Eustance and ridden by Marcia Wakeman, and TRIGUEIROS (Portuguese Dress - 17 entries) owned and ridden by Justine Jevon. The judge of both classes was Peter Maddison Greenwell and Sussex Lusitanos were the proud sponsors of the Portuguese Dress Class. The Portuguese riding cloak, kindly offered by "O Mundo da Equitacao" to the Best Dressed Rider in the Portuguese Class, was awarded to Lois Beckett, riding RUBI.
Lusitanos were victorious in the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix - French driver, Francois Dutilloy won the Horse Pairs with purebred Lusitanos QONWENTO and REVISOR, belonging to the Monte da Ravasqueira stud.
The Sussex Lusitanos stand was busy throughout the week, a testament to the high level of interest in the Lusitano breed - Lusitano mares Quota and Xanaia were our "equine ambassadors" in the trade stand show stable.
At an end-of-show reception, representatives of Sussex Lusitanos were honoured to meet HM The Queen and the HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, both of whom expressed their interest in the Lusitano and delight at the breed's involvement at Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Sussex Lusitanos will be at Royal Windsor Horse Show (www.rwhs.co.uk) on 12th -16th May. Held in the private grounds of Windsor Castle, the Show provides an ideal venue to promote the Lusitano horse. The main shows in Portugal for the Lusitano horse include the International Festival for the Lusitano Horse, the Feira do Cavalo in Ponte de Lima, and the Golega Horse Fair.

Francisco Bessa de Carvalho, Senior Rider of the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, will be giving a training clinic at Wedgewood Farm, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, on 29th - 31st January 2010.
Horses and riders of all levels will participate, all of whom are eagerly looking forward to benefitting from from Francisco's immense experience. Most horses on this clinic will be Lusitanos; however there will also be native breeds and Warmbloods.

This year's Golega Fair Organised Trip takes place on 10th - 15th November. Now in its 19th consecutive year, this trip has introduced hundreds of visitors from the UK and other countries eg. USA, South Africa, Australia, Germany, Denmark, to the extraordinary sights and sounds of Portugal's most famous equestrian event. The Fair showcases dressage, working equitation, driving, breed classes and displays by the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art and the Leziria Grande Equestrian Centre. Lusitano breeders display their horses in their pavilions, and the streets are lined with shops and restaurants.

Sussex Lusitanos provided 10 entertaining demonstrations over 6 days at the Alltech FEI Jumping and Dressage Championships, Windsor on 25th – 30th August. Emphasizing the versatilty of the Lusitano, the displays included dressage, Portuguese equitation, English showing, working equitation and endurance. The riders were Tori Peter (RH, Sueste), Malcolm Hunt and Suzanne Holt (QB), Marcia Wakeman (Tostao, Quilate), Sherene Rahmatallah (Quota), Leila Rahmatallah (Numerario, Venturoso), Holly Barber (Rafa), Natasha Read (Xerife) and Jenny Myerscough (Venturoso Repoula). Well known international dressage trainer John Lassetter made guest appearances on 2 days, delighting the crowds with his mini teach-in sessions with Leila Rahmatallah and Numerario. The “icing on the cake” for the Lusitanos at Windsor was an invitation , at short notice, from the organisers for 6 of our riders to open the Gala Evening on Friday 28th August, and to escort the VIP open-top Range Rover carrying Muhammad Ali and Henry Cooper on their lap of honour around the Castle Arena. The Sussex Lusitanos stud stallion Numerario (by Embaixador, bred by Manuel Francisco Romao Tavares) took the Lusitano Championship for the 5th successive time at this year’s Suffolk Show on May 28th. Described last year as “an extremely good stallion”, this year’s judges, Frederico Saramago and Joao Quintas, agreed and awarded Numerario the Arnold Smith Trophy for the Best In Hand Lusitano at the Show. In the youngstock class, Sussex Lusitanos again took the top ribbons with their 3 yr old filly, Bandarilha (by Mosaico, bred by Aldo Machado Gouveia).

Despite the typically changeable British weather the Sussex Lusitanos stand at Royal Windsor Horse Show (13th - 17th May) welcomed large numbers of visitors all week. The 2 bay Lusitano horses on the stand were an added attraction and drew lots of attention to the breed.
There was successful in the show ring also - in the Ridden Lusitanos in Portuguese Dress (sponsored by Sussex Lusitanos) our 2 bay horses, Quota and Venturoso, were placed 3rd and 6th. Winner of this class was Quebre Nozes, ridden by Helen Barlow, and Quilate, ridden by Marcia Wakeman won the Ridden Class in English Dress (sponsored by Blazepoint Ltd)

Sussex Lusitanos will have a double presence at this year's Royal Windsor Horse Show on 13th - 17th May. The Sussex Lusitanos Stand will be at the Show for the 5 days and Sussex Lusitanos are also proud to be sponsoring the Lusitano (Portuguese Dress) Class on Sunday 17th May (Copper Arena). The Show takes place in lovely surroundings of Home Park, the private gardens of Windsor Castle and features top class dressage, showjumping, driving and showing. The 2009 European Working Equitation Championships will be held on 25th - 28th June at the Feira da Cavalo, Ponte de Lima, in the north of Portugal. Teams from several countries will compete, including Spain, Italy, Portugal, Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, Sweden and Austria and others.

Over 70 UK visitors enjoyed 5 days of blue skies and countless images of Lusitano horses at this year's Golega Horse Fair, which took place on 10th - 16th November.
In the Lusitano classes, Afonso Henriques (Coudelaria Monte Velho) won the Class for 3 yr old Colts, and Zimbro (Coudelaria Vaz Torres) won the Class for 4 yr old Stallion and was crowned Overall Champion Lusitano of the Fair.
A highlight for the UK visitors was the day visit to the Romao Tavares Stud in the Alentejo.

Portugal, Brazil and Australia will be sending 7 purebred Lusitanos to the forthcoming Olympics to compete in dressage. The Portuguese dressage team will comprise 3 Lusitanos : Notavel JCL Puy du Fou (Carlos Pinto), Galopin de la Font (Daniel Pinto), and Oxalis de Meia Lua (Miguel Nuno Duarte). The Brazilian dressage team will also comprise 3 Lusitanos :Oceano do Top (Leandro Silva), Nilo VO (Rogerio Clementino) and Samba (Luiza Tavares de Almeida). In aditional Hayley Beresford, a member of the Australian dressage team, will partner the purebred Lusitano Relampago do Retiro. We wish them all every success!

The grey stallion Numerario (Embaixador x Bailarina, bred by Coudelaria Romao Tavares) was crowned Overall Supreme Champion Lusitano at the Suffolk Show on 29th May. This is the 4th time Numerario has won this title. French judge Philippe Lautier described him as "a very good horse". The 2 yr old filly Bandarilha, bred by Aldo Machado Gouveia and owned by Roger Barnett won the Purebred Youngstock Class. The Purebred Ridden Class was won by Holly Barber riding Rafa, and the Parade Horse Class went to Marcia Wakeman riding Tostao. Full results will appear on www.suffolkshow.co.uk

The Italian Equestrian Federation has announced that the 2008 European Working Equitation Championships will be held on 10th - 12th October at the Horse Country Centre, nr Arborea, Sardinia.
Great Britain will be represented by a team of riders. Other participating countries will include Spain, Portugal, Italy and France.
The Horse Country Centre, Sardinia has superb equestrian facilities; it hosted the 2006 European Junior Working Equitation Championships.

Six Lusitanos and their riders travelled from Portugal to take part in the Centenary Finale at Olympia on 17th - 22nd December. Riders David Duarte Oliveira, Ricardo Moura Tavares, Paulo Santos, Miguel Fonseca, Bruno Rodrigues de Silva and David Gomes rode 11 displays in total - they were dressed in brightly coloured 17th century bullring jackets. The display was co-ordinated by Sussex Lusitanos. During the Show the team were honoured to meet Camilla, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and also HRH The Princess Royal.
