Herdade d’Agosto is the private country estate of the Romão Tavares family, breeders of champion Lusitano horses and Alentejana cattle.
Located in the northern Alentejo, 2 hours from Lisbon, the estate comprises over 1500 acres of rolling countryside covered in holm-oak, cork and olive trees. The stud was founded at the end of the 19th century and has remained in the ownership of the same family for over 130 years. It is now managed by the great grandson of the stud’s founder, Francisco José Romão; his grandson Ricardo Moura Tavares is a National and European Champion of Working Equitation.
The owners are now extending the invitation to guests from abroad to come and ride their Lusitano horses across the beautiful Alentejo countryside, and to share the traditional methods of breeding and training the stock.

Lessons and hacking – tuition in the schooling arena and accompanied leisurely group rides across the estate. Herdade d’Agosto has over 40 horses : stallions, broodmares, and youngstock. Bred to work, they are courageous and hardy yet kind and generous to ride. The riding is suitable for riders with moderate experience. |

Luxurious manor house accommodation – at Casa de Assumar, a traditional house in the village of Assumar, 3km from the stud. Modernized to an exceptional standard – en-suite bedrooms, comfortable lounges, outdoor swimming pool/sun terrace. Good English is spoken. |

Meals – breakfast and dinner (3 courses, wines included) at Casa de Assumar . Specialising in products of the region: naturally reared beef and pork, chouriço and olives, country baked bread, rich desserts, and acclaimed wines. Vegetarian options also available. |
